Is the Esplanade River Cruise in Manila Worth It?

The Esplanade river cruise takes you along the Pasig River, mostly between the historic Intramuros area and parts of Makati. Expect a calm, slow-moving ride with decent views of colonial churches, modern high-rises, and some surprisingly green stretches. The boat is comfortable and air-conditioned, with outdoor deck space for photos. It’s not a party boat or a luxury experience — it’s a relaxed 45-90 minute sightseeing trip that works well if you want to see the city from a different angle without fighting traffic. The river itself is cleaner than it was ten years ago but still looks urban and industrial in places.

Best time is December to February when it’s cooler and drier. Avoid the peak rainy season (July–September) because trips get cancelled if the river level is too high. Expect to pay around $25–45 per person depending on whether you choose the basic tour, sunset departure, or one with a simple meal and drinks. Sunset sailings are noticeably nicer.

Tip: Pick the sunset cruise if you only do one — the light on the buildings is much better. Skip the dinner option unless you’re short on time; the food is average and you’ll eat better on land for the same money. Bring mosquito repellent if you plan to sit on the open deck at dusk.
