Is a Seattle Ferry Ride Worth It?

A Seattle ferry ride gives you sweeping views of the Sound, the city skyline, and the mountains on a clear day. Expect a functional, working boat rather than a luxury cruise: you'll share space with commuters, bikers, and families. The ride is smooth, the wind can be brisk on deck, and the whole experience usually lasts 30-90 minutes depending on your route. It's one of the cheapest and most authentic ways to get on the water here.

Summer (June through early September) is the best time because of long daylight, lower rain odds, and better mountain visibility. Shoulder months like May and October can still be pleasant but bring layers. Expect to pay around $10-25 per person for a round-trip passenger ticket; cars add significantly more. Food and drinks are available onboard but are overpriced and mediocre.

Pick the Bainbridge Island run if you want the classic skyline view and a pleasant town to walk around for a few hours. Skip the short harbor tours that stay close to the waterfront; they're more expensive and feel like tourist traps. Bring binoculars, a warm jacket even in summer, and go at golden hour for the best light.
