Should You Do the Yehliu Geopark & Pingxi Day Trip?

This is a long day trip (8–9 hours) that combines dramatic coastal rock formations at Yehliu Geopark with the old mining town of Pingxi and its sky lantern tradition. Expect to spend a couple of hours walking around the strange, eroded sandstone shapes at Yehliu, then head inland to Pingxi where you’ll release a sky lantern and walk the short, touristy old street. The itinerary usually squeezes in Jiufen too. It’s scenic but quite packed; you’ll be on a bus or van with other people for most of the day. The rock formations are genuinely impressive and unlike anything else in Taiwan, while the lantern release feels festive even if it’s become very commercial.

Best time is October to early April when the northeast coast is cooler and less humid. Avoid summer weekends if you dislike crowds and heat. Expect to pay around $45–90 per person for a small-group tour including transport and entrance fees; private tours start from roughly $180–250 for two people. Public transport is possible but time-consuming and more tiring.

Honest tips: Prioritize Yehliu early in the morning before the crowds and strong sun hit the exposed headland. In Pingxi, the lantern release is the main event — skip the overpriced shops on the old street and just enjoy the river valley walk instead. If you only have one day outside Taipei and like dramatic nature mixed with light culture, this tour delivers. If you prefer slow travel, do Pingxi separately by train on a weekday.
