Ghibli Museum: Worth It?

The Ghibli Museum is a small, deliberately old-fashioned building in Mitaka filled with original artwork, short films you won’t see anywhere else, and detailed models from the studio’s films. Expect a calm, slightly cramped experience where you wander at your own pace through spiral staircases, a rooftop garden with a life-size Laputa robot, and a cinema that shows exclusive 15–20 minute films. It’s aimed at people who already love the movies; if you’re only mildly curious, the advance-ticket hassle and 2–3 hour visit can feel like more trouble than it’s worth. Most visitors say the atmosphere and attention to detail are the real draw rather than any single big exhibit.

Best time to go is weekday mornings in spring (late March–May) or autumn (October–November) when crowds are lighter and the park around the museum looks nicest. Expect to pay around ¥1,000–1,500 per adult including the short film ticket; children are cheaper. Book exactly four months ahead on the official lottery system or through authorized resellers. Honest tip: skip the overpriced café and just buy a coffee from the station before you walk in. Do watch the exclusive short film – that’s the one part you genuinely can’t get anywhere else.
