The better ones feel like a stylized kabuki-meets-martial-arts performance; cheaper versions lean more toward dinner-theater spectacle with flashing lights and loud music. You'll usually sit at tables or in a small theater, and many include a basic bento or two drinks. It's touristy by nature but can be genuinely fun if you like this kind of thing.

Best time is spring (March-May) or autumn (October-November) when crowds aren't overwhelming and you can comfortably wear the optional costume photos. Avoid summer weekends.
