The Gold Souk is a proper working market in Deira, not a theme park. Expect narrow covered lanes lined with hundreds of shops glittering with gold, diamonds and platinum. It's noisy, warm, and crowded with both tourists and local families. The experience is more about browsing and soaking in the atmosphere than serious shopping unless you know your stuff. Many visitors combine it with the nearby Spice Souk and a quick abra boat crossing of the creek for a half-day hit of old Dubai. It's genuinely interesting for an hour or two, but can feel overwhelming if you're not in the right mood.
Best time is November to March when it's cooler; avoid midday in summer. Go in the morning (opens around 10am) or after 4pm when it's slightly less packed. Expect to pay around $25-60 per person if joining a small group tour that includes transport and a guide. Independent visits cost nothing beyond Abra fares (under $1) and whatever you buy. Most people spend $0-200 on gold depending on whether they actually purchase anything.
Tip: Look for shops displaying fixed prices if you hate bargaining; otherwise haggle hard, but only if you're seriously buying. Skip the over-the-top necklace sets aimed at tourists and instead check simple 22k gold bangles or chains if you want something authentic. Don't buy on the first pass; walk the whole souk once, then return to the better shops.
