Sandsurfing in Dubai: What You Need to Know

Sandsurfing (or sandboarding) in Dubai is basically strapping on a board and sliding down steep desert dunes, usually combined with a dune-bashing 4x4 ride. Expect soft, powdery red sand that feels very different from snow – you’ll get decent runs but it’s slower and you’ll sink if you lose momentum. Most trips last 4–7 hours total and include 30–45 minutes of actual boarding time mixed with quad biking, camel photos, and a desert camp dinner. It’s fun and a bit silly rather than an extreme sport; the real highlight is the dune views at sunset.

The best time is November to March when it’s cooler (25–30°C daytime). Skip the brutal summer months. Expect to pay around $45–85 per person depending on whether you want a basic shared tour or a private experience with longer dune time and better vehicles. Quad biking usually costs extra.

Pick the shorter afternoon-to-sunset tours that focus on boarding and dune bashing – they feel less rushed. Skip the full-day versions that drag you through multiple camps and tourist traps. Wear closed shoes, long pants, and bring a buff or scarf; the sand gets everywhere and the rides are dusty.
