Marrakech Hammam: What to Expect

A traditional Marrakech hammam is a steam bath and full-body scrub that leaves you cleaner than you've been in years. Expect to enter a series of warm, tiled rooms filled with steam. You'll be doused with buckets of warm water, vigorously scrubbed with a rough mitt (it feels like sandpaper but you'll shed a shocking amount of dead skin), soaped, and rinsed again. Many places finish with a massage using argan oil. It's communal in local versions (women-only or men-only days/times) and more private in tourist-oriented spas. The heat and scrubbing can feel intense the first time; some people love it, others find it slightly overwhelming. Plan on 60-90 minutes total.

Best time to go is October to April when it's cooler outside; the contrast feels amazing and the medina isn't as brutally hot. Expect to pay around $35-80 depending on whether you choose a basic local hammam or a fancier riad spa with massage and extras. Skip the add-on facial unless you're at a high-end place; they're often mediocre. Pick the mid-range option with black soap scrub and argan massage if it's your first time. Bring flip-flops if you're hygiene-conscious, and remember you'll be mostly naked under a towel or disposable underwear they provide.
