Should You Tour the Palaces in Marrakesh?

Palace tours in Marrakesh usually mean walking through the 19th-century Bahia Palace and the older Saadian Tombs or Ben Youssef Madrasa. Expect ornate tilework, carved cedar ceilings, peaceful courtyards, and a lot of crowds. The sites are beautiful but not huge; most people spend 45–90 minutes in each. Guides explain the history and point out details you’d otherwise miss, though the core experience is visual rather than deeply educational. It feels like stepping into a lavish, slightly faded film set. In summer it gets uncomfortably hot inside with poor ventilation, so plan accordingly.

The best time to go is spring (March–May) or autumn (October–November) when it’s warm but not scorching and the light is good for photos. Expect to pay around $50–90 per person for a half-day guided group tour that includes two or three sites and transport; private tours run $120–200 for a couple. Entry tickets alone are cheap but lines can be long without a guide.

Pick the Bahia Palace for its scale and gardens; skip the Royal Palace unless you’re really into modern Moroccan protocol buildings—it’s mostly closed to visitors anyway. Go early in the morning to avoid the worst crowds and bring water. If you’re short on time or energy, choose just one site rather than rushing through all of them.
