Should You Do a Traditional Hammam in Marrakesh?

A traditional hammam is Morocco’s version of a bathhouse: you sit in a hot, steamy room while an attendant scrubs you vigorously with black soap and a rough kessa glove. Expect to be completely naked (same-sex only), doused with buckets of warm water, and left feeling like a new person. The first 10 minutes can feel intense if you’re modest or ticklish; after that most people relax into it. It’s genuinely cleansing — you will see piles of dead skin roll off you — and the heat loosens everything up before a massage if you add one.

Best time is autumn (Sept–Nov) or spring (March–May) when it’s warm but not brutally hot outside. Avoid peak summer if you dislike extra heat. Expect to pay around 250–450 MAD for a classic hammam + scrub; adding a 30–40 minute massage pushes it to 450–700 MAD. Hotels often charge more for the same service.

Pick a proper local hammam over fancy riad versions if you want the real experience. Skip the add-on “aromatherapy oils” — they’re usually generic and unnecessary. Bring your own underwear to change into afterwards; many places give you a disposable pair that feels like sandpaper.
