The Ourika waterfall hike is a solid half- to full-day escape from Marrakech’s chaos. You’ll drive about an hour into the Atlas Mountains, then walk up a rocky, sometimes slippery trail along the river for roughly 45–90 minutes depending on your pace and how far you want to go. The waterfalls themselves are pretty rather than spectacular — think clear mountain water tumbling over rocks with swimming holes and lots of other visitors in summer. The valley is scenic, the air is noticeably cooler than the city, and you’ll pass Berber villages and small farms. It’s not remote wilderness, but it’s the easiest way to see the High Atlas without committing to a multi-day trek.
Best time is spring (March–May) when the river is full and wildflowers are out, or autumn (Sept–Oct). Avoid summer weekends if you dislike crowds and heat; winter can be chilly and the trail muddy. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person for a day trip from Marrakech including transport, a local guide, and lunch. Private tours sit at the higher end; shared minibus trips are cheaper.
Smart pick: go with a small-group tour that includes a decent lunch by the river — it’s a nice break after the hike. Skip the camel or horse rides at the start; they’re overpriced and unnecessary. Wear proper hiking shoes or trainers with grip — flip-flops are a bad idea on the wet rocks.
