Ourika Waterfall Tour from Marrakesh: Worth It?

The Ourika Valley tour is a straightforward half-to-full day escape from Marrakesh into the Atlas Mountains, about an hour’s drive. You’ll hike a well-trodden trail along the river to a series of waterfalls (usually the Setti Fatma ones). The path has some steep sections and can get slippery; expect to scramble over rocks and cross small streams. The scenery is genuinely pretty — green gorge, Berber villages on the hillsides, and cold mountain water — but it’s not remote wilderness. In peak season the trail gets busy with other tourists and local guides offering unsolicited help.

Best time is spring (March–May) when the water flow is strong and the valley is lush. Summer is hot and crowded; winter can be chilly but much quieter. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person depending on whether you go in a shared minivan with a group or book a private driver and guide. Lunch is usually included or available riverside for extra.

Tip: Choose a small-group or private tour that includes a stop at a Berber house for mint tea — it’s the most relaxed part of the day. Skip the camel or horse rides at the start; they’re overpriced and unnecessary. Wear proper walking shoes with grip — flip-flops are a bad idea on the wet rocks.
