Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides in Charleston: Worth It?

A Charleston carriage ride is exactly what it sounds like: you and a handful of other people clip-clopping through the historic district for 45–60 minutes while the driver points out houses, churches, and gossip about former residents. The horses are surprisingly calm despite the traffic and tourists. Expect slow pace, occasional smells, and a narrated mix of facts and light storytelling. It’s touristy by nature but still one of the better ways to see the scale and details of the old neighborhoods without staring at a phone screen.

Best time is March–May or October–early November when the weather is pleasant and the horses aren’t suffering in extreme heat. Summer rides (especially midday) can be brutal for both you and the animals; avoid them. Expect to pay around $35–$55 per adult depending on the operator, time of day, and whether you book a private carriage. Kids are usually cheaper. Evening tours cost more but the lighting on the old houses is noticeably nicer.

Pick a company that runs smaller carriages (fewer people) and departs from the stable area near the old market rather than the big buses-on-wheels versions. Skip the “ghost” or “haunted” tours unless you enjoy theatrical nonsense; the straight historic ones are more satisfying. Sit on the right side if you can—better views of the mansions on most standard routes.
