Horseback Riding in Marrakesh: What to Know

Expect a mix of peaceful palm groves, dusty desert fringes, and views of the Atlas Mountains in the distance. Most rides last 1–3 hours and move at a gentle pace with walking and some trotting. The horses are generally calm but can be a bit headstrong; you'll ride through orchards, along irrigation channels, and into open scrubland. It's pretty but not dramatically scenic like the desert near Merzouga. Morning rides are coolest and least dusty. Afternoon ones can be hot and hazy.

Best time is October to April when temperatures are comfortable. Skip summer unless you enjoy 40°C heat and flies. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person for a standard 2-hour group ride with transfer from the medina. Private rides or longer half-day options run $80–150. Prices have risen but still feel reasonable compared to Europe.

Tip: Choose a small-group or private ride in the Palmeraie over anything advertised as “desert” – the real Sahara is much farther away. Skip any operator that pushes photos or extra camel stops; the best experiences are straightforward, early-morning rides with decent horses and quiet guides who let you enjoy the surroundings.
