Marrakesh gardens range from intimate riads with fountains and birdsong to sprawling estates planted with cacti, roses, and palms. Expect a mix of peaceful escape and varying levels of upkeep. The smaller ones in the medina are easy to reach on foot but can feel crowded by mid-morning; the larger properties outside the city walls offer more breathing room yet require transport and time. In spring (March to early May) the light is softer, temperatures are pleasant, and many plants are in bloom. Summer is brutally hot and most gardens lose their freshness by 10am. Winter is mild but some plants look tired.
Expect to pay around $15–45 per garden visit including transport where needed. A half-day guided walking tour that covers two or three sites usually lands between $60 and $110 for two people. Tip: prioritize the Secret Garden or similar restored medina properties if your time is short; they give the best sense of traditional Islamic garden design without a long trip. Skip the big drive to Anima unless you specifically love contemporary planting and can go early; the journey eats half the day and the return traffic can be grim. Combine one central garden with the nearby Ben Youssef area so the walk feels purposeful rather than tourist-ticking.
