Hot Air Balloon Safari from Nairobi: Worth It?

A hot air balloon safari from Nairobi usually means a very early transfer (often 4am) to either the Masai Mara or sometimes the Rift Valley. The flight itself lasts about an hour at sunrise, floating silently over the savanna while you look for elephants, zebra herds, and the occasional lion or hippo. After landing you get a full champagne breakfast in the bush, then continue with a game drive. The whole day is long (you’ll get back to your Nairobi hotel around 4–6pm) but the aerial perspective is genuinely special and very different from a regular vehicle safari. It’s not a cheap add-on though – expect to pay around $450–$850 per person depending on whether it’s a basic Mara flight or a more luxurious package with private transfers and top-tier guiding.

The best time is June to October during the dry season and the wildebeest migration; you’ll see more animals and have better weather for flying. January–March is also decent if you want to avoid peak crowds. Skip the absolute cheapest operators that cut corners on safety briefings or pilot experience. Instead, choose one that includes a solid game drive afterwards and has a clear cancellation policy for windy weather – balloons get grounded more often than people expect. If you’re on a tight budget or short on time, a good traditional game drive in the Mara will still show you plenty of wildlife without the early start or the big price tag.
