Hot Springs Day Trip from Mexico City

A day trip to the hot springs usually means 12–15 hours door-to-door with a good chunk of that spent on the bus. You’ll arrive at a dramatic canyon filled with warm mineral pools, small waterfalls you can stand under, and a series of caves where the water is hotter. The main pools are pleasant and relaxing; the caves feel more like a steamy adventure. Expect crowds on weekends and Mexican holidays. The water is genuinely warm (not scalding), the setting is beautiful, but it’s a long ride for what is essentially a very nice thermal pool experience.

Best time is the dry season, November through April. Rainy season (June–September) turns the roads slower and the canyon greener but also muddier. Expect to pay around $90–$180 per person depending on whether you go with a shared small-group tour or a private driver. That usually includes transport, park entry, and sometimes a basic lunch.

Pick a tour that leaves very early (6–7am) so you get decent time at the springs before the afternoon rush. Skip the biggest group buses if you can; they’re cheaper but you’ll share the pools with 40 other people. Bring water shoes—the rocks are slippery—and don’t underestimate the drive back; you’ll be tired.
