Huacachina Oasis Day Trip from Lima

Expect a long but doable day: you leave Lima around 4-5am, spend a couple hours on a boat at the Ballestas Islands watching sea lions, birds, and penguins, then continue to Huacachina for dune buggy rides and sandboarding on massive desert dunes surrounding a small palm-lined oasis. The buggy part is loud, fast, and fun if you like roller-coaster vibes; sandboarding is easier than it looks but you'll eat a lot of sand. Total driving time is 8-10 hours round-trip, so you'll get back to Lima after 9pm. It's tiring but one of the better easy nature escapes from the city.

Best time is December to March when it's warmer and drier in the desert; shoulder months (April-May, Oct-Nov) are still fine and less crowded. Expect to pay around $80-130 per person for a full-day guided tour including transport, boat trip, buggy/sandboarding, and basic lunch. Private tours or higher-end operators sit at the top of that range.

Tip: choose the combo Paracas + Huacachina tour if you want variety; if you're short on time or energy, skip the Ballestas boat and just do a half-day Huacachina sandboarding excursion from Ica instead. Bring a buff or scarf for the sand, wear closed shoes, and don't overpay for photos at the oasis.
