Huacachina Sandboarding from Lima: Worth It?

Huacachina is a small desert oasis about four hours south of Lima. The main activity is sandboarding on massive dunes that surround the lagoon. Expect a mix of adrenaline and pure exhaustion. You’ll get a basic board, sometimes with a small seat, and ride down steep faces. The dune buggy ride in between runs is loud, fast, and bumpy — think rollercoaster in sand. It’s genuinely fun for most people but can feel chaotic and touristy, especially if you go on a crowded weekend. The oasis itself is small; once you’ve done a couple of runs and walked around the water, you’ve pretty much seen it.

Best time is May to September when it’s cooler and drier in the desert. From December to March it gets brutally hot. Most travelers do this as a full-day tour from Lima that also stops at Paracas. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person for a decent full-day group tour including transport, guide, sandboarding, and buggy. Independent visits are cheaper if you stay overnight in Huacachina but require more planning.

Tip: Skip the full-day tour if you can afford an overnight stay — you get the dunes early in the morning with far fewer people and a much better experience. If doing the day trip, choose the version that spends more time at Huacachina rather than rushing between too many stops. Bring a buff or scarf; the sand gets everywhere.
