Expect a long day. Most people do Huacachina as a full-day tour from Lima (about 4–5 hours each way). You’ll arrive at a small desert oasis surrounded by massive dunes, then hop into a dune buggy for 20–40 minutes of high-speed thrills—think roller-coaster drops and sharp turns. Sandboarding comes next: you’ll lie on a board and slide down steep faces. It’s fun but the sand gets everywhere and the sun is brutal. The whole adventure portion lasts 1.5–2.5 hours before the long ride back. It’s genuinely exciting if you like speed and desert scenery, but exhausting if you’re not up for 10+ hours of travel.
Best time is May to October (dry season) when the dunes are firmer and the weather is cooler. December–March is hotter and the sand can be softer, making boarding tougher. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person from Lima depending on whether you go private, shared, basic or with extras like lunch and Paracas stop. Private tours with better vehicles sit at the higher end.
Tip: choose the version that goes straight to Huacachina only if your priority is sandboarding—adding Paracas usually means less time on the dunes. Skip the cheap open-air buggies if you want shade and decent suspension; the ride back is long enough that comfort matters.
