Should You Visit Lima's Art Museum?

The Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI) holds a solid collection of Peruvian art spanning colonial religious paintings, 19th-century landscapes, and strong modern and contemporary works. Expect a calm, well-organized visit lasting 90 minutes to two hours. The permanent collection gives a decent overview of how Peruvian artists interpreted their own history and identity; temporary exhibitions are often the real draw and tend to be thoughtful. It's not overwhelming in size, which is a plus after navigating Lima's traffic. The building itself is a restored neoclassical landmark with a pleasant courtyard cafe for a break.

Best time to visit is May through September during the cooler, drier "winter" months when Lima isn't as gray and drizzly. Go on a weekday morning right after opening to avoid school groups. Expect to pay around $8-15 for a standard ticket; guided options or special exhibitions can push it to $25-40 per person. A combined city museum pass sometimes offers slight savings if you're visiting multiple sites.

Tip: Prioritize the contemporary galleries and any current temporary show; the colonial section is decent but can feel repetitive if you've seen other Latin American collections. Skip the audio guide unless you're short on time; it's better to wander freely or join a curator talk if available. Wear comfortable shoes; the floors are beautiful but hard.
