Expect a huge, thoughtfully landscaped 120-acre estate with world-class gardens, an impressive art collection, and a serious research library. The botanical side is the real draw: a dozen distinct gardens ranging from dense subtropical jungle to minimalist Japanese, desert cacti, and formal rose walks. It’s peaceful but not empty—popular with both serious plant people and casual visitors. Plan on 3–4 hours minimum if you want to see more than a couple sections without rushing. The art galleries and library exhibitions are solid but secondary for most travelers.

Best time is spring (March–May) when the roses and camellias explode, or fall for smaller crowds and pleasant temperatures. Avoid midday summer heat. Expect to pay around $25–$35 per adult depending on the day and whether you add the occasional special exhibition; kids and members get discounts. Parking is free.
