The Hofburg is Vienna's vast former imperial palace right in the city center. Expect a mix of grand state rooms, the Sisi Museum dedicated to Empress Elisabeth, and the Imperial Silver and Tableware collections. The experience feels more like a museum visit than a living palace. Rooms are beautifully preserved but can get crowded; audio guides or live tours help make sense of the history. The whole complex takes 2–3 hours if you do it properly. It's worth visiting if you like Habsburg history or elegant 19th-century interiors; skip it if you're not into museums or royal memorabilia.
Best time is spring or fall when crowds are lighter and weather is comfortable for walking the courtyards afterward. Summer gets very busy. Expect to pay around €35–55 per person depending on whether you choose a basic ticket, a guided small-group tour with skip-the-line access, or a combo that includes other palaces. Add a few euros for an audio guide if not included.
Honest tip: do the Imperial Apartments and Sisi Museum together with a decent guide; the stories bring the spaces to life. Skip the Silver Collection unless you really love fancy tableware — it's repetitive and the least interesting part. Wear comfortable shoes; there are plenty of stairs and polished floors.
