Island Hopping by Speedboat in Phuket: Worth It?

Expect a long, fast, and often bumpy ride on a powerful speedboat that gets you to the islands quicker than a ferry but can leave you soaked and a bit rattled. Most day trips from Phuket hit Phi Phi, Maya Bay, or the closer Khai Islands. You'll get snorkeling stops in decent reefs, beach time, and lunch on the boat or at a basic island restaurant. The water is usually clear and the scenery is genuinely impressive, but the boats carry 20-40 people so it's not a private experience. Noise, crowds at the popular swim spots, and a packed itinerary are normal.

The best time is December to April when the Andaman Sea is calmer and visibility is good. From May to October the monsoon brings rougher seas, bigger swells, and more cancellations. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person depending on the route, whether it includes premium stops like Maya Bay, and what's bundled (lunch, snorkel gear, national park fees).

Pick a tour that visits fewer islands with more time at each rather than the ones that race between five spots. The closer Khai Islands are a smarter, less exhausting choice if you just want to swim and snorkel without the long haul to Phi Phi. Skip anything advertising “VIP luxury” on a standard speedboat – it's usually the same experience with a slightly better lunch.
