The Rosario Islands snorkeling trip is a solid day out if you want to get out of Cartagena’s heat and into clearer water. You’ll spend about 45–60 minutes actually snorkeling across two or three shallow reef spots. The reefs are decent but not mind-blowing — lots of small fish, some healthy coral patches, and occasional turtles or rays if you’re lucky. The rest of the day involves boat time, a lunch stop on one of the islands, and a lot of people. It’s pretty social and can feel a bit like summer camp once the music starts. Visibility is usually good (8–15m) but drops after rain.
Best time is December to April when the water is calmer and clearer. June–November is cheaper but you risk choppy seas and poorer visibility. Expect to pay around $70–$110 per person for a full-day tour that includes transport, snorkel gear, lunch, and a plankton bay stop at night if you choose the sunset option. Private or smaller boats push toward the higher end.
Tip: Pick the smaller group catamaran or sailboat tours over the big party speedboats — you’ll actually enjoy the snorkeling instead of fighting crowds. Skip the plankton bay if you’re not staying overnight on the islands; it’s usually underwhelming unless the bioluminescence is really firing. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof phone case.
