Jazz brunch in New Orleans is exactly what it sounds like: live music, heavy plates of Creole food, and plenty of cocktails before noon. Expect a loud, festive room filled with tourists and locals, a solid jazz combo (usually traditional rather than avant-garde), and a big buffet or family-style service. It’s fun, caloric, and very New Orleans, but it’s also touristy. The music is genuine; the experience is not exactly intimate. Most places run two seatings, 10am and 12:30pm or similar. Go once if you’ve never done it. Twice is rarely necessary.

The best time is February through early May when the weather is pleasant and the city isn’t yet brutally hot. Avoid peak summer unless you love sweating with your eggs. Expect to pay around $55–$85 per person for the full experience including a drink or two; add tax, tip, and a second round of bloody marys and you’re easily looking at $90–$110. It’s not cheap, but it’s a classic New Orleans morning.

Pick the spots that offer live jazz with the meal rather than a show after. Get the grillades and grits or the shrimp and grits; skip the soggy made-to-order omelet station and anything called “jazz eggs.” Arrive on time for the first seating if you want decent table placement near the band. Book ahead on weekends, show up early on weekdays.
