Jiufen & Yehliu Day Tour from Taipei

This is a long but doable day trip (8–10 hours) that combines two very different places. Yehliu Geopark features weird sandstone rock formations shaped by wind and waves — the famous Queen’s Head is the star, but the whole coastal area is interesting for 60–90 minutes. Jiufen is an old gold-mining town built on steep hillsides with narrow alleyways packed with teahouses, shops, and snack stalls. Expect crowds, especially on weekends. The tour usually also stops at Shifen for sky lanterns or the waterfall, so the day feels like a greatest-hits package of northeast Taiwan rather than a deep dive into one spot. It’s tiring but gives you a solid sampler without needing to rent a car.

Best time is October to April on a weekday. Summers are hot, humid, and rainy; winter can be chilly and misty but the crowds drop significantly. Expect to pay around $80–130 per person for a small-group tour with hotel pickup — cheaper options around $45–60 exist but usually mean larger buses and less time at each stop. Private tours run $200+ for two people.

Honest tip: Prioritize Yehliu early in the day before the light gets harsh and the crowds thicken. In Jiufen, skip the overpriced main-street restaurants and head a bit uphill for better views and quieter teahouses. If you dislike crowds or want flexibility, consider doing Jiufen on your own by bus instead of the full packaged tour.
