The Kanheri Caves are a large group of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park, about an hour from central Mumbai. Expect a mix of simple monastic cells and a few more impressive halls with carvings, stupas, and inscriptions. The site is peaceful once you get past the entrance area, but it involves a fair amount of walking on uneven stone paths and stairs. The nearby Global Vipassana Pagoda is usually included in tours and offers a striking contrast with its huge white dome. It's not a jaw-dropping must-see like Ajanta or Ellora, but it's a solid half-day escape from the city if you like history and quiet places.
Best time to visit is November to February when it's cooler and drier. Avoid the monsoon (June–September) as the paths get slippery and some areas can be closed. Expect to pay around $30–70 per person depending on whether you go private with a guide and hotel pickup or join a small group. Entry to the park and caves is cheap, but transport and guide push the total up.
Pick a private tour if you want decent explanations; the on-site signage is limited. Skip trying to do this by public transport unless you enjoy long, complicated local bus rides. Wear good walking shoes, bring water, and go early in the day before it gets hot and crowded.
