Kayak Bioluminescent Bay Tour from San Juan

The tour is a nighttime paddle in Fajardo’s Bioluminescent Lagoon, about 45–60 minutes east of San Juan. You kayak through a mangrove channel into an open bay where the water glows bright blue-green with every paddle stroke and fish trail. The bioluminescence is genuinely impressive on good nights, though it varies with moon phase, water disturbance, and recent rain. Expect 2–2.5 hours on the water plus transport time. Groups are usually small (under 12), guided, and include basic kayaks, life jackets, and headlamps. It’s a real workout if there’s wind, and you’ll get wet.

Best time is summer through early fall (June–October) on new-moon or cloudy nights when it’s darkest. Winter is cooler but often has brighter moonlight that washes out the glow. Expect to pay around $65–$110 per person from San Juan including round-trip transport; cheaper if you drive yourself. Private or small-group tours sit at the higher end.

Tip: Book the version with transport from San Juan if you don’t want to drive at night after a long paddle. Skip the big-bus group departures that leave at 5 pm and spend hours waiting; later departures (7–8 pm) give you a better show. Bring bug spray for the mangroves and a waterproof bag for your phone.
