Kayak Tours in the Maldives: Worth It?

A Maldives kayak tour usually means paddling across shallow lagoons or between small islands on a stable sit-on-top kayak, often with a guide pointing out marine life below. You'll see stingrays, reef sharks, and colorful fish in crystal-clear water, sometimes stopping to snorkel. Tours last 2-4 hours and are easy enough for beginners, though you'll get a decent workout if there's any wind. It's a calmer, more intimate way to experience the atolls than staying on the resort beach, but it's not a big adrenaline adventure.

The best time is December to April when seas are calmer and visibility is excellent. May to November brings more rain and stronger winds that can cancel trips or make paddling tougher. Expect to pay around $60-120 per person for a half-day guided tour, including equipment and snorkel gear. Resort-based trips are usually at the higher end.

Pick a tour that includes a snorkel stop and goes outside the immediate resort lagoon if possible - that's where you'll see more sea life. Skip the sunset kayak option if you're on a tight budget; the daytime wildlife-focused trips are more rewarding for the same effort. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a waterproof bag for your phone.
