Should You Do a Sandbank Tour in the Maldives?

A sandbank tour is basically a half-day boat trip to a tiny strip of white sand that appears in the middle of the ocean at low tide. You’ll spend a couple of hours swimming in shallow, impossibly clear water, snorkeling around the edges where small reefs often sit, eating a simple picnic, and just staring at the ridiculous shades of blue. It’s not a deserted-island fantasy for most — other boats usually show up — but when the light is right and the crowd is light, it’s genuinely special. Most trips also add snorkeling stops and sometimes dolphin spotting on the way back.

Best time is December to April when seas are calmer and visibility is excellent. June to October can be cheaper and quieter but expect rougher rides and possible cancellations. Expect to pay around $60–$130 per person depending on whether it’s a basic sandbank + snorkel trip or a bigger combo with picnic, sunset, and dolphin cruise. Private or semi-private options sit at the higher end.

Tip: Pick the version that includes a good snorkel stop and lunch; pure sandbank-only tours can feel short. Skip the ones that cram in too many activities — they often rush the sandbank time which is the part you actually came for.
