Expect warm, clear water and vibrant reefs teeming with reef sharks, rays, turtles, and countless fish. Most half-day tours from Malé or nearby resorts visit two or three sites, last 3–5 hours, and include gear, snacks, and a guide. The boat rides can be bumpy, the groups sometimes 8–15 people, and you’ll spend more time in the water than on the boat. It’s genuinely fun if you like snorkeling, but it’s not a private paradise experience.
Best time is December to April when seas are calmer and visibility often exceeds 20 meters. May–November brings cheaper rates but rougher water, more rain, and reduced visibility. Expect to pay around $50–$120 per person for a standard half-day trip; longer excursions or private options push toward the higher end. Resort-based trips usually cost more than those booked from the airport or local islands.
Pick smaller-group tours that visit local-island reefs rather than the crowded house reefs near big resorts. Skip anything promising “guaranteed whale sharks” outside peak season—it’s mostly luck. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you’re picky about fit; rental gear is functional but basic.
