A seaplane tour gives you the classic overhead view of the Maldives: turquoise lagoons, circular atolls, and tiny resort islands fringed by white sand. Flights usually last 15–25 minutes and depart from Velana (Male) or selected resort islands. You’ll fly low enough to see reef shapes and boat traffic clearly, then circle back. It’s a short, loud, thrilling ride — think more roller-coaster than relaxing sightseeing. The plane is small (8–14 seats), windows are decent but not huge, and everyone rotates seats so photos are possible on both sides. Turbulence is common in the afternoon.
Best time is December to April when the weather is driest and the sea is flattest. May–November can still work but rain and rougher seas often cancel or delay flights. Expect to pay around $150–$350 per person depending on duration, whether it’s a shared scheduled flight or private charter, and if you depart from Male or a resort. Resort guests usually pay less because transfers are bundled.
Pick a morning departure for calmer air and better light. Skip the cheapest ultra-short “scenic transfer” if you actually want circling time over pretty atolls — those are basically just quick hops. Bring earplugs; the engine noise is significant. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take something beforehand. It’s a memorable splurge, but one flight is plenty for most people.
