Liwa Oasis Dune Bashing: Worth It?

Liwa Oasis dune bashing is a proper desert thrill ride. You’ll be thrown around in a 4x4 as it charges up and over enormous soft dunes, some reaching 200–300 meters. Expect 30–45 minutes of intense, stomach-dropping action mixed with quieter stops at the base of Tal Moreeb (one of the tallest dunes), a camel farm, and the green date palm groves of the oasis. It’s genuinely remote and empty compared to the Dubai desert; the scale is impressive. The ride itself is bumpy, dusty, and can feel quite wild — not ideal if you get motion sickness easily.

Best time is November to March when it’s cooler and the sand is firmer. Summer is brutal and most operators scale back. Expect to pay around $180–280 per person for a full-day trip from Abu Dhabi that includes pick-up, lunch or picnic, dune bashing, and the main stops. Private tours for small groups sit at the higher end.

Tip: Choose a full-day Liwa-specific tour over a rushed half-day combo. Skip the add-on camel riding or quad biking — they’re usually short, overpriced, and feel touristy. Focus on the dunes and the oasis; that’s where the real value is.
