Los Arcos is a small rocky island group just south of Puerto Vallarta that forms a protected marine reserve. The snorkeling is shallow, calm, and beginner-friendly with decent visibility most days. You’ll see schools of tropical fish, some small corals, pufferfish, and the occasional ray or moray eel. The boat ride takes 30-45 minutes each way and tours usually include 45-60 minutes in the water plus a stop at a nearby beach. It’s not world-class diving but it’s a solid half-day nature trip if you’re not an experienced snorkeler.
The best time is November through May when the water is clearest and seas are calmest. Summer and early fall bring warmer water but more rain, swells, and reduced visibility. Expect to pay around $75–$110 per person for a standard group tour that includes gear, guide, snacks or lunch, and transport. Private tours run $250–$450 for a small group depending on boat size and inclusions.
Pick a morning departure to avoid the afternoon wind and crowds. Bring your own snorkel mask if you have one that fits well; rental gear is average. Skip the add-on “underwater scooter” or “fish feeding” options — they’re gimmicky and can disturb the reef. If you’re prone to seasickness, take something before the boat leaves the marina.
