Expect a full-day boat trip from mainland Bali or directly from Nusa Lembongan/Penida. You’ll spend 30-60 minutes in the water at Manta Bay where currents can be strong and the water chilly. Mantas often glide right overhead or do barrel rolls while feeding; it’s genuinely impressive when they show up in numbers. Most trips combine this with one or two other snorkel stops for reef fish and turtles. Visibility is usually decent but not Caribbean-clear, and you’ll share the site with 10-30 other snorkelers from multiple boats.
Best time is May to October (dry season) when seas are calmer and manta sightings are more consistent. December to March is rougher, with bigger swells and higher chance of cancellations. Expect to pay around $45–75 per person from the mainland including transport, gear, lunch and guide. Local boats from Lembongan are often cheaper.
Pick a smaller-group tour that visits Manta Bay first thing; the crowds and current get worse later. Skip any operator that promises “guaranteed” manta encounters or adds extra upsells like underwater photos. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them—rental gear is often well-used.
