Mardi Gras in New Orleans: What to Expect

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a loud, chaotic, alcohol-fueled street party that lasts for weeks but peaks on Fat Tuesday. Expect massive crowds on Bourbon Street and parade routes, beads raining from floats, marching bands, and a mix of locals in elaborate costumes and tourists in T-shirts. The daytime parades are surprisingly family-friendly with good-natured crowds; nights get rowdier, especially in the French Quarter. The season runs from Twelfth Night in early January through Ash Wednesday, but the real energy ramps up in the two weeks before Mardi Gras Day.

Expect to pay around $150–350 per person for a basic multi-day trip including modest lodging, food, and drinks if you book early. Rooms can easily double or triple closer to the date, and parade-viewing spots with seating start at several hundred dollars. A solid budget-conscious visit lands near the lower end if you stay a bit outside the Quarter and avoid overpriced souvenirs.

Best tip: pick one or two big parades in Uptown or on St. Charles rather than fighting for space on Bourbon every night; the experience is better and less claustrophobic. Skip the overpriced “official” seated viewing stands unless comfort is your top priority—standing with locals is more fun and authentic.
