Mont Salève is the big green wall you see from Geneva. It offers a surprisingly quick escape into proper mountains with wide views over the city, Lake Geneva, and the Alps beyond. Expect a steep but well-marked trail that takes 1.5–2.5 hours to reach the top depending on fitness and which path you choose. The payoff is a broad, grassy plateau perfect for wandering, picnicking, or continuing along easier trails. You can hike up and take the cable car down, which most people do. The whole round trip from central Geneva can easily be done in half a day including travel.
Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–October). Summer weekends get busy with local families and trail runners; go on a weekday morning if you can. Expect to pay around CHF 25–45 total per person: bus ticket both ways plus cable car descent. Bring water, good shoes, and sun protection; the south-facing slope heats up fast.
Pick the main trail from the cable car base (clear, steady climb) and skip the very steep “direct” variants unless you enjoy scrambling. Don’t bother with an organized tour; the bus from Geneva’s main station drops you within a 10-minute walk of the trailhead. Just check cable car hours before you leave so you don’t get stranded at the top after sunset.
