Mount Salève Excursion from Geneva

Mont Salève is the big mountain right next to Geneva that locals call "the balcony of the city." A trip up takes about 30-45 minutes from central Geneva by tram or bus to the cable car base. The ride itself is quick (around 5 minutes) and delivers wide open views over the whole city, the lake, and the Jura and Alps beyond on clear days. At the top you get easy walking paths, a few restaurants, and the option to hike further along the ridge. Expect wind, cooler temperatures than in town, and the very real chance of clouds swallowing the summit if the weather turns. It's a half-day outing at most unless you plan a proper hike.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May to October). Summer offers the longest days and warmest weather but can be hazy; September and early October usually give the clearest air and fewer crowds. Expect to pay around CHF 25-45 per person total including transport from Geneva and the cable car round-trip. Add another CHF 15-30 if you sit down for a meal up top.

Pick the cable car over driving unless you specifically want to hike from the bottom; parking and the road can be a hassle. Skip it entirely on hazy or cloudy days – the views are the whole point. Bring a light jacket even in summer and check the visibility from downtown before you head out.
