The mud volcano experience is exactly what it sounds like: you climb a small cone-shaped hill about 50km north of Cartagena, strip down to a swimsuit, and sink into a pit of warm, thick grey mud. Dozens of people float around together like human dumplings while locals give surprisingly strong massages. After 20-30 minutes you climb out, rinse off in a nearby lagoon or with buckets of water, and usually get a basic lunch on the way back. It's undeniably touristy but also genuinely weird and fun in a way most day trips aren't. The whole thing takes 4-6 hours door-to-door including transport.
Best time to go is December through March when it's dry and slightly less humid. Rainy season (April-November) turns the access road into a mess and the surrounding landscape looks less appealing. Expect to pay around $25-45 per person depending on whether you want hotel pickup, lunch, and a smaller group. Private tours or ones that add a beach stop push toward the higher end.
Tip: choose the simplest tour with early departure — the volcano gets crowded and gross by 11am. Skip any package that promises “private” mud time; it's almost never true. Bring a dark-colored towel you don't mind throwing away and a plastic bag for your muddy clothes. The mud does stain.
