The Municipal Market (Mercadão) is a lively, crowded historic food hall packed with stalls selling massive sandwiches, fresh juices, pastries, cheeses, and cured meats. Expect a noisy, bustling experience with strong smells of spices and grilled food. It’s less of a refined “food tour” and more like eating your way through a busy public market while standing or perched on stools. You’ll share space with locals, office workers, and other travelers. Come hungry — portions are generous and everything is rich. The market itself is beautiful, with dramatic stained-glass windows, but it gets hot and chaotic on weekends.
Best time is weekday mornings (arrive by 9–10am) to avoid the worst crowds and get fresher products. Avoid weekends and lunch hours if you dislike lines and noise. Expect to pay around R$80–150 per person total if you sample a few items: a famous mortadella sandwich, a couple of juices or pastels, coffee, and maybe a dessert. It’s good value for the quality. One solid tip: get the mortadella sandwich at a busy stall and the fresh juices — both are excellent. Skip the overpriced sit-down restaurants upstairs unless you want air-conditioning and a table; the real experience is at the ground-level counters. Go with an open mind and comfortable shoes.
