Musée d'Orsay: Worth It and How to Visit

Expect a stunning converted train station filled with the world's best Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art: Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Degas, and Rodin sculptures. The building itself is the star as much as the paintings – high ceilings, giant clocks, natural light pouring in. Crowds are heavy around the big names on the upper floors, but you can find breathing room in the side galleries or the decorative arts sections. It's manageable in 2–3 hours if you don't try to see everything.

Best time is shoulder season (April–May or September–October) when lines are shorter and the weather is decent for walking there along the Seine. Expect to pay around €16–25 for a standard ticket depending on whether you buy online, add audio guide, or join a small group tour. Evening tickets on Thursdays can be less crowded if you're a night owl.

Skip the long official audio guide and just use the free wall texts plus your own research beforehand. Prioritize the top floor Impressionists early in your visit, then wander the middle level for lesser-known works and the beautiful sculpture hall. If you're short on time or energy, honestly consider skipping the temporary exhibitions unless something specific interests you.
