Arc de Triomphe: Worth It and How to Do It

Climbing the Arc de Triomphe gives you one of the best views in Paris. From the top terrace you see the full sweep of the Champs-Élysées, La Défense in one direction and the Louvre in the other, all without the crowds you get at the Eiffel Tower. Expect 284 steps up a spiral staircase; it's doable for most people but not ideal if you have knee or mobility issues. The traffic circling below is constant and loud, yet once you're above it the city feels surprisingly calm. The museum inside on the first level is small and skippable.

Best time is spring or fall on a clear weekday morning right after opening. Summer evenings stay light longer but lines are longer too. Expect to pay around €13-25 per person depending on whether you buy a simple ticket or one that includes skip-the-line access and a short guided walk. Combo tickets with other monuments can stretch to €30 but aren't necessary unless you're short on time.

Pick the rooftop access ticket and go up on your own; it's straightforward and you can stay as long as you want. Skip the guided walking tour of the Champs-Élysées unless you really want the history lesson; the avenue itself is mostly chain stores and overpriced cafés. Buy tickets online in advance during busy seasons or you'll waste an hour in the queue.
