Museum of Science and Industry Chicago: Worth It?

Expect a massive, classic science museum filled with hands-on exhibits, giant machines, and a few genuine wow moments. The U-505 submarine and the coal mine tour are the standout experiences that still feel fresh after all these years. You'll spend most of your time walking through cavernous halls with planes overhead, interactive physics stations, and biology displays. It's educational without being stuffy, but it can get loud and crowded, especially around school groups. Plan on 3-5 hours if you want to see the highlights without rushing.

Best time is weekday mornings in spring or fall when crowds are lighter. Summers are busy with families and the holidays get packed. Expect to pay around $40-65 per adult once you add general admission, one or two special exhibits or tours, and parking or transit. Kids are cheaper but not free. Food inside is decent but pricey, so many people bring snacks or eat nearby.

Honest tips: definitely do the coal mine and submarine if you can reserve spots; they're the most memorable. Skip the giant dome theater unless you're really into whatever film is showing that day; it's rarely worth the extra time and money. Wear comfortable shoes; the place is huge.
