Hiking in Aruba's National Park: What to Know

Aruba's Arikok National Park covers about 20% of the island and offers a mix of arid landscapes, rocky trails, caves, and coastline. Expect a hot, dry hike with cacti, iguanas, and dramatic rock formations rather than lush jungle. Most trails are moderate; a typical half-day guided hike includes swimming stops in natural pools and some snorkeling if conditions allow. The terrain is uneven and unshaded, so it's more strenuous than it looks on photos. You'll see the island's native plants and get a feel for its geology, but it's not a wildlife-rich safari.

The best time is December through April when temperatures are slightly cooler and rainfall is almost nonexistent. Avoid July to October if you hate intense heat and humidity. Expect to pay around $60–$110 per person for a half-day guided group hike that includes transport, water, and basic equipment. Independent entry to the park is much cheaper but requires your own vehicle and navigation.

Pick a morning departure to avoid the worst heat and bring sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Skip the longest full-day treks unless you're very fit; the standard coastal loop with a swim is plenty for most visitors. One honest tip: the sea breeze makes the ridge sections nicer than they first appear, but the flies can be annoying near the coast—pack repellent.
