The Palais Garnier is one of those places that looks even more over-the-top in person than in photos. Expect a 45-90 minute guided tour that takes you through the grand foyer, up the famous staircase, into the auditorium, and sometimes into a few rehearsal rooms or the library. The building is stunning but crowded; you'll be in a group of 10-30 people, listening to stories about its construction, the chandelier, and the Phantom legends. It's mostly standing and walking on marble stairs, so wear decent shoes. The self-guided option using an app or booklet is cheaper but you'll miss half the anecdotes that make the place come alive.
Best time to go is fall or spring on a weekday morning when crowds are lighter and the light through the windows looks best. Summer is busy and hot inside; winter can feel damp. Expect to pay around $25-40 for a standard guided tour, $15-25 for self-guided, and $250+ if you want a private experience. Skip the overpriced "behind the scenes" add-ons unless you're a serious opera buff; the standard tour already shows you the highlights. Book at least a few days ahead in high season or you'll waste time in the ticket line. Combine it with a quiet lunch nearby rather than trying to do it on a full Louvre day.
