Is a Paddleboard Tour in New Orleans Worth It?

Paddleboarding in New Orleans is calmer and more interesting than most visitors expect. You’ll glide through calm bayous, narrow canals, and urban waterways that most tourists never see. The experience is a mix of gentle exercise, wildlife spotting (herons, turtles, occasional gators), and surprisingly good views of the city skyline and old neighborhoods from the water. Tours usually last 90 minutes to two hours and include basic instruction. It’s a low-key, genuinely pleasant way to get off the pavement, though it’s not the high-adrenaline adventure some people imagine.

The best time is spring (March–May) and fall (October–November) when the weather is mild, humidity is lower, and the water is usually flat. Summer is hot and buggy; winter can be surprisingly cold and windy. Expect to pay around $55–$85 per person for a guided tour. Rentals without a guide run cheaper but you’ll miss the local knowledge and navigation help.

Pick a small-group tour that goes into the bayous or City Park waterways instead of the crowded Mississippi River paddle. Skip anything marketed as a “sunset cocktail cruise” on a paddleboard — it’s usually more gimmick than good experience. Wear quick-dry clothes, bring a waterproof bag for your phone, and don’t forget sunscreen even if it’s cloudy.
