Pagsanjan Falls is a solid day trip if you want something completely different from Manila’s usual city noise. You’ll spend most of the day on the road (roughly 2–2.5 hours each way), then climb into a narrow wooden banca for a thrilling 30–40 minute ride through a deep gorge with towering limestone cliffs on both sides. The boatmen paddle upstream, shoot small rapids, and eventually reach the waterfall where you can swim in the pool or take a short bamboo raft ride right under the cascade. It’s scenic, a bit adventurous, and genuinely fun — but it’s also physically tiring and the return trip downstream can feel long after you’ve been splashed all day.
Best time is December to May during the dry season. The water is clearer, the rapids are manageable, and you’re far less likely to have a trip cancelled due to heavy rain. Expect to pay around $90–160 per person from Manila depending on whether you go private or join a small group; this usually covers transport, boat ride, guide, and lunch. Solo travellers almost always do better joining a small-group tour.
Honest tips: Always choose the package that includes the raft ride under the falls — it’s the best part. Skip the optional “hidden cave” if you’re short on time or energy; it’s usually crowded and not that impressive. Bring a dry bag, quick-dry clothes, and water shoes. The boatmen work hard and expect a tip at the end — budget for it.
