The boat leaves from Callao port, about 45 minutes from central Lima. Expect a solid 4.5–5 hour trip: an hour each way across often choppy water, then time cruising around the islands watching sea lions, Humboldt penguins, and seabirds. The highlight for most people is the optional swim—15–20 minutes in the cold Humboldt Current alongside curious sea lions. The water is cold (around 15–18°C), the boat ride can be bumpy, and there’s no shade on many vessels. It’s a genuine wildlife encounter, not a zoo trip, so sightings vary but sea lions are almost guaranteed.
Best time is December to March when the sea is calmer and marine life is most active; avoid June–September if you get seasick easily. Expect to pay around $70–85 for a basic wildlife-watching tour and $110–140 if you want to swim with the sea lions (includes wetsuit and snorkel gear). Book a morning departure to avoid the afternoon wind.
Tip: Choose the swim option if you’re comfortable in cold water and don’t mind the boat ride—it’s the part most people remember. Skip it and just do the boat tour if you’re prone to seasickness or short on time. Bring a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and a dry bag for your phone.
