Larco Museum in Lima: Worth Visiting?

The Larco Museum holds one of the best private collections of pre-Columbian art in Peru. Expect a calm, well-organized experience in a beautiful old mansion with gardens. The main halls show stunning ceramics, textiles, and gold pieces arranged by culture and period. There's also an erotic gallery (adults only) that displays explicit Moche pottery — it's frank but tasteful and usually the part people remember most. Plan on 90 minutes to two hours; it's never overwhelmingly crowded but can feel busy mid-morning.

Best time to go is the shoulder seasons (April–May or September–November) when Lima is less humid and tourist numbers are lower. Expect to pay around $15–25 for a standard adult ticket; guided tours or combo options push the total closer to $40–60 per person. Students and seniors get discounts.

Honest tips: Get the basic admission ticket and walk through at your own pace — the audio guide or group tour adds little you can't learn from the excellent English labels. Definitely visit the storage area if it's open that day; seeing thousands of pots on shelves is strangely impressive. Skip the on-site café unless you just want a cold drink — there are better places nearby.
